Zombie learns that the base is on lockdown. He asks why, but no one knows. He then asks the orderly, Kistner, to help him to the bathroom. Kistner refuses and offers to get him a bed pan. While he’s gone, Zombie walks to the bathroom. Kistner comes to check on him. When he walks in, Zombie knocks him out and steals his clothes. Zombie makes his way into the corridor and slips into a room where a doctor is washing in preparation for a surgery. He pretends to be looking for supplies while searching for a scalpel. He finally finds one and uses it to cut out the new implant placed in his neck.
Zombie takes an elevator down to the main lobby and goes over his plan, chastising himself for not killing Kistner. When the elevator opens, he peeks out the glass doors and sees the light of a bomb about to detonate.
Cassie passes by the armory and decides to gather some supplies. She changes into soldier’s fatigues and takes a M16 rifle that she adds a silencer to. An explosion shakes the building. Concerned about the explosion and the weapons in the room, Cassie quickly leaves as another explosion shakes the building. She passes a group of soldiers and is stopped by an officer. She has to kill him when he doesn’t buy her story. Cassie finds the room where the younger children are gathered. She searches for Sammy, but he sees her first. She goes to him to offer the teddy bear she came all this way to return. He brushes the bear aside and hugs her.
Zombie runs downstairs and covers three flights before the first explosion hits. It is followed by a second and third, knocking Zombie down and ripping open his wounds.
Zombie slowly makes his way to the bomb shelter where Nugget should be. As he approaches, he comes across Nugget and a soldier (Cassie) walking him away. Zombie prepares to kill this soldier to save Nugget.
Zombie puts his plan to save Nugget in action by knocking out an orderly and taking his clothes. The first thing he does is remove the new tracker that has been placed in his neck, an action fueled by Flintstone’s death. At the same time, Cassie is navigating the ventilation system to find Sammy, taking a brief detour to arm herself. It is clear that Zombie and Cassie are on a collision course, but the outcome of their meeting cannot be predicted at this point, especially when Zombie vows to kill anyone who comes between him and Nugget. This foreshadows a dangerous—albeit ironic—encounter for Cassie, once again increasing the novel’s tension. Before the Arrival, Cassie was presumably never on Ben’s radar. Now, they are brought together by their respective promises to Nugget.
The base is on lockdown, and both Cassie and Zombie see bombs being set up. The explosions are Vosch’s attempts to destroy the surface buildings in order to move their operations elsewhere—to prevent their secret from becoming widespread among humans. This also adds to the novel’s tension because it makes Cassie, Zombie, and Nugget’s escape more precarious.
Cassie has spent the entire novel struggling with her promise to find Sammy. She finally arrives at the base, and he spots her first. She offers Sammy his teddy bear, the item that has become a symbol of their parting promise, but he only wants his sister. Sammy’s reaction proves that he never stopped believing in Cassie, and that the teddy bear was simply a soft expression of familial love—not a hard promise. Even without the bear, Sammy would have been relieved to see his remaining family.
