Part 5, Chapters 57-59Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 5: “Beloved”

Part 5, Chapter 57 Summary: “The Blood Shrike”

Helene wakes up to see Laia in her room, humming. From the style of the room, Helene realizes they are somewhere in Delphinium. Noticing the blade at Laia’s waist, Helene reaches for her own blade, but Laia tells her that they did not drag Helene for miles for her to stab Laia later. Helene hears a baby’s cry and Laia assures her that the Emperor, baby Zacharius, and Livia are safe and well. When Harper enters, happy and relieved to see her, Helene realizes that he may have feelings for her. However, she maintains her official demeanor and asks for a report.

Harper reports that many Martials have fled Antium and now that Keris has been named Empress, she is moving the capital to Serra. Antium is under Karkaun rule, and the Karkauns have enslaved remaining Martials and Scholars. Quin Veturia, Gens Acquilla, and the Gens of Delphinium have pledged loyalty to Zacharius, and Keris has declared Zacharius an enemy of the Empire; anyone who supports him will be killed.

Helene feels uncomfortable without her mask, but Harper assures her, “Your face couldn’t be anything but beautiful, Blood Shrike. With or without the mask” (443). Helene blushes, and they look intensely at each other. Helene finally sees all the emotions and feelings Harper keeps buried inside. The two share a passionate kiss, but then Helene realizes that she cannot give in to her desire because she needs to focus on the Empire and the safety of her people. Helene breaks away from the kiss, and realizing that Harper is about to use her proper name, reminds him that she is his Blood Shrike, and he must address her properly. Devastated, Harper asks for permission to leave.

Laia convinces Livia, who is Empress regent, to free the enslaved Scholars. Helene steps into the room and everyone fusses over her. Helene asks Laia if she has seen Elias, and from her pained expression, Helene understands that Laia knows Elias has changed. Laia and Helene talk about the future, about what the Nightbringer may be planning. Helene says that he wants to use the Martials to destroy the Scholars. Laia points out that Helene will need help if she wishes to reinstate Zacharius as Emperor.

Knowing that she will have to work with Helene, Laia asks Helene to teach her archery. Helene realizes that Cook, who was also an archer, was Laia’s mother. Helene agrees to help Laia, and the two shake hands.

Part 5, Chapter 58 Summary: “The Soul Catcher”

Elias helps the ghosts of Marcus and his brother Zacharius, who have suffered in the Waiting Place, pass on. Elias gives them a happy memory from when they were boys, and the two ghosts pass into the next life together.

Elias sees that Laia waiting for him at the northern borders and appears to her. He tells Laia goodbye, explaining that he must be Banu al-Mauth—Soul Catcher—because it is his duty. Laia, feeling betrayed, tells him to take the armlet he gave her. Elias takes it, thinks about throwing it away, but instead keeps it. Later, Mauth makes Elias a throne out of the earth and flowers to keep him from feeling lonely. Mauth assures Elias that he is with Elias.

Elias sees The Wisp and asks the ghost what she is looking for. The ghost replies that she is looking for her “lovey.” Upon further questioning, Elias realizes the ghost is his grandmother, Karinna. Before he can ask anything further, the ghost vanishes, and Elias feels another presence inside the Waiting Place, returning home.

Part 5, Chapter 59 Summary: “The Nightbringer”

The Nightbringer and the Augurs gather at the Waiting Place to set the jinn free. One of the Augurs, Cain, is the Scholar King who imprisoned and betrayed the jinn. The Nightbringer warns Cain that he will have to witness the havoc he will wreak before dying. Cain believes Helene, Laia, and Elias will destroy the Nightbringer, but the Nightbringer believes he has already won.

The Nightbringer overcomes the Star’s resistance and uses it to release the jinn. The earth shakes as the trees holding the jinn burst apart. Far away, Laia feels the change, and gasps. The jinn thank the Nightbringer, calling him Meherya, and he asks them for forgiveness, calling them his children.

Part 5, Chapters 57-59 Analysis

The last three chapters comprise the narrative’s falling action. Since this is the third book in a series, there is no resolution at the end. Instead, the book sets the foundation for the fourth and last story in the series, A Sky Beyond the Storm. Thus, these final chapters expand upon the themes explored throughout this book while positioning certain characters for new beginnings.

The evolution of Laia and Helene’s friendship in Chapter 57 is one of this section’s most significant developments. They both want to free their people and defeat Keris and the Nightbringer. Recognizing their similar interests, Laia and Helene put aside their differences and vow to work together. Laia and Helene’s camaraderie, an instance of hope in an otherwise bleak ending, develops the theme of The Duality of Oppression and Resistance by emphasizing the importance of working together against oppression. It also foreshadows that the Martial refugees and the Scholars will unite forces to fight against Keris and the Nightbringer.

Significantly, unlike the rest of the book, the title of Elias’s chapters changes to “The Soul Catcher,” underscoring his transformation from Elias to the Soul Catcher. Elias turns Laia away when she comes to see him; while he briefly feels sadness, Mauth numbs Elias’s feelings so he does not unnecessarily suffer the loss of his loved ones and his humanity. In Chapter 58, Elias’s struggle for balance momentarily ends as he puts his duty before his humanity, forgoing his human desires to ensure he can fulfill his role. Similarly, Helene puts her duty above her feelings for Harper. They share a kiss, but upon realizing she cannot afford to be distracted, Helene reverts to her role as his commander and assumes the personality of the Blood Shrike.

A Reaper at the Gates begins and ends with a chapter from the Nightbringer’s perspective, where he finally frees the jinn. The Nightbringer continues to be hungry for revenge. Now freed, the rest of the jinn will join his crusade, which is clear when he notes, “I see their soul-deep need for vengeance. I see their bloody reaping to come” (458). This structure, with the Nightbringer’s perspective bookending the narrative, highlights his role as the mastermind behind the events that transpire in the book. The narrative begins with the Nightbringer deciding to free the jinn and ends with him fulfilling his promise. The last chapter also brings the Nightbringer’s sacrifice to the forefront. To ensure his revenge, the Nightbringer forsakes the possibility of love: “A girl I once loved gasps, wheeling her horse about to gaze with gold eyes at the crimson sky over the Forest of Dusk” (457). Though the Nightbringer and Laia shared a deep connection, the Nightbringer ultimately prioritizes revenge above love—a choice that illustrates the destructive nature of revenge quests and sets an ominous tone for the next book.
